Elblag (German Elbing) is a city in northern Poland, capital of Elblag Province, and a port near Gdansk. It is on the Elblag River. A canal connects Elblag with the eastern arm of the Vistula River. The city is an industrial center; manufactures include locomotives, machinery, metal goods, and textiles. It was founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1237, and joined the Hanseatic League in the late 13th century. Elblag revolted against the Knights in the 15th century, and became part of Prussia in 1772. Until World War II (1939-1945), the city was part of East Prussia, Germany.
